Ten architecture teams were invited to design a new boarding house on the corner of a protected ensemble in Vienna’s world heritage: its first district. This site condition became the most critical aspect in the design process: weaving a contemporary new structure into the existing ensemble proportions.
As a functional hybrid a boarding house is neither only an apartment house nor only a hotel, but both in one. Its users are people who stay in the city (of Vienna) for 3 weeks or 6 months, too short to get themselves an apartment, too long to stay in a regular hotel room.
Visitors choose their “suites” in relation to their time of stay and their hotel fetish: central bed or separate room.
